Three spreads from Chapter I

What changes after the first night with it open between you? Often, it's the questions: easier to ask, kinder to answer, and a yes that means more because a no was always welcome. Thirty-two pages on consent, bodies, desire and repair. Six of them, below, set as they appear in the guide.

Consent is
a conversation.

A previous yes does not cover the next thing.

Consent means a freely chosen agreement to a specific activity. It needs to be informed, ongoing and reversible. A relationship, marriage, flirtation, nudity or past encounter does not create an obligation. Agreement to kissing is not agreement to oral sex, penetration, recording or condom removal.

Ask, listen, respond

Use plain invitations: “Would you like me to touch your chest?” “Do you want to keep going?” Offer a real alternative: “We can also just cuddle.” A yes should have room to be a no without sulking, bargaining or consequences.

Check in when the activity changes. If someone becomes still, silent, tense or unsure, pause and ask. Body responses such as lubrication, erections or orgasm do not prove consent. Someone asleep, unconscious or too impaired to understand and choose cannot consent.

Make stopping easy

Say what
you mean.

Direct language can be kind, sexy and useful.

A partner cannot reliably read your thoughts. Choose a calm moment outside sex for the bigger conversation. Ask, “Is now a good time to talk about intimacy for ten minutes?” Start with something you appreciate, then make one specific request.

Replace a verdict with a direction

Instead of “You never know what I like,” try “I like lighter pressure, and I need you to keep that rhythm for longer.” Instead of “We don’t have enough sex,” try “I miss making time for closeness. What kind of connection feels possible this week?” Avoid treating frequency as evidence of love.

During touch, use short directions: “Softer.” “Stay there.” “Slower.” “More lube.” “Please stop.” Ask narrow questions that are easy to answer: “Lighter or firmer?” Leave space for “neither.” A partner can guide your hand, if you both want that.

Listen without a defense speech
